After deplaning in Nairobi, we climbed aboard a rickety van and took a harrowing ride to one of the city’s slums. Tens of thousands of people huddled together in makeshift housing became my first experience and most penetrating memory of Africa.

There, I encountered a woman who had just started a business stringing objects together in small, keychain-like creations. She had completed three pieces the size of her palm. It was all she had at that time. For her, those trinkets represented more than creativity or resourcefulness, they represented hope. A hope that given enough time, her creations would lead to a new beginning.
